Montenegro has approved a tourism and heritage project worth more than €7 million for Brskovo near Mojkovac, centred on the development of the medieval settlement into a new visitor attraction in northern Montenegro. The project covers the historic town and fortress of Brskovo, which was an important centre of mining, commerce and coin production in the medieval Balkans.
The development forms part of efforts to diversify northern Montenegro’s tourism offer beyond winter resorts and nature-based tourism. Mojkovac has traditionally attracted less tourism investment than destinations including Kolašin, Žabljak and Montenegro’s coastal areas, despite its location between major mountain and national park areas.
The planned investment includes the potential development of a cultural-tourism route combining mining heritage, archaeology and outdoor tourism. The project can also support economic activity in sectors including accommodation, restaurants, guiding services, transport and local production if Brskovo is incorporated into wider tourism itineraries. The development is also linked to Montenegro’s broader strategy of reducing the economic gap between the coastal region and the less-developed north, where weaker private investment and population decline remain structural challenges. The project’s economic impact will depend on implementation, including visitor infrastructure, accessibility, promotion and connections with existing tourism centres around Mojkovac, Kolašin and Durmitor.
