At the Mobile World Congress 2026 held in Barcelona, Crnogorski Telekom and Ericsson Nikola Tesla announced the continuation of their collaboration aimed at enhancing Montenegro’s mobile network infrastructure. This partnership, reaffirmed by Stjepan Udovičić, CEO of Crnogorski Telekom, and Siniša Krajnović, President of the Management Board of Ericsson Nikola Tesla, will focus on advancing the development of the 5G network and related digital services.
The renewed agreement emphasizes improving network capacity, service quality, and coverage to meet the increasing demand for mobile data and digital services. The two companies plan to deploy advanced telecommunications technologies that will not only enhance consumer connectivity but also facilitate Montenegro’s broader economic digital transformation.
Crnogorski Telekom has established itself as a leader in mobile network coverage, boasting the highest levels of 4G and 5G signal availability in Montenegro. The latest agreement aims to further improve these capabilities by increasing network capacity and expanding the geographical reach of next-generation mobile services.
A significant aspect of the modernization initiative involves utilizing the 3.6 GHz frequency band, which is prevalent in Europe for high-capacity 5G services. This additional spectrum will primarily be deployed in urban and suburban areas where there is a high demand for mobile data and fast connectivity. This strategy will enhance bandwidth and performance for applications such as video streaming and cloud services.
In addition to urban improvements, the partnership also aims to bolster coverage in rural areas by upgrading existing infrastructure and establishing new base stations utilizing the 700 MHz frequency band. This lower-frequency spectrum is advantageous for broader geographic coverage, allowing signals to travel longer distances and penetrate buildings effectively, thereby extending 5G connectivity across more regions of Montenegro.
The modernization strategy includes installing additional base stations to alleviate pressure on existing network capacity, ensuring stable performance amid rising mobile traffic. European telecommunications operators have reported significant increases in mobile data consumption due to streaming services and connected devices, making it essential to expand network capacity to maintain reliable service quality.
Crnogorski Telekom’s ongoing partnership with Ericsson Nikola Tesla underscores its commitment to technological leadership within Montenegro’s telecommunications sector. Company management asserts that continuous investment in advanced mobile infrastructure aims to provide users with network quality comparable to leading European markets.
Ericsson Nikola Tesla has been a key partner of Crnogorski Telekom in developing mobile networks across Southeast Europe, supplying telecommunications equipment, network solutions, and ICT services. The collaboration is set to continue implementing cutting-edge telecommunications technologies while maintaining high standards of network performance.
This partnership dates back several years and was instrumental in launching Montenegro’s first commercial 5G services in 2022 through infrastructure developed with Ericsson Nikola Tesla’s support.
The Mobile World Congress serves as a significant platform for telecommunications companies worldwide, showcasing advancements in areas such as 5G networks and cloud infrastructure while fostering global industry partnerships.
Investment in 5G infrastructure is crucial for Montenegro’s digital economy as it enables new technologies and services. High-speed mobile networks support various applications from smart city initiatives to advancements in tourism and public administration.
The expansion of 5G networks is expected to bolster economic development by enhancing the country’s digital infrastructure. Improved connectivity can drive growth in the IT sector, facilitate remote work opportunities, and enhance access to digital services nationwide. For Montenegro’s small economy, advancements in digital connectivity are vital for productivity and innovation.
Through their renewed partnership, Crnogorski Telekom and Ericsson Nikola Tesla aim to ensure that Montenegro remains aligned with technological advancements in telecommunications. The modernization of the mobile network and expansion of 5G coverage are pivotal components of establishing a robust digital foundation for future economic growth.
