Resident deposits accounted for a growing proportion of Montenegro’s bank funding by the end of August, while the share held by non-residents declined to 17.70%, from 19.10% a year earlier. Non-resident deposits totalled €1.15 billion, slightly below their level in August 2025. By contrast, household deposits increased by 12.79% year on year to €2.62 billion, raising their share of total deposits from 38.04% to 40.34%.
Deposits from the non-financial sector also increased, reaching €2.02 billion and representing 31.16% of the banking system’s total deposits.
Overall deposits grew by €388.6 million between August 2025 and August 2026. The increase came overwhelmingly from resident depositors, reflecting the stronger contribution of domestic households and non-financial companies to bank funding.
The decline in the relative share of non-resident deposits does not indicate a broader withdrawal of foreign capital from Montenegro, as foreign direct investment inflows continued to increase. The change concerns the composition of bank deposits, with resident savings accounting for a larger proportion of the funding base.
