Household deposits in Montenegro reached €2.62 billion at the end of August, marking a 12.79% increase compared with the same period a year earlier. The amount represents a substantial share of the country’s estimated 2026 GDP of €8.59 billion.
Most household savings remained in accounts that allow immediate withdrawals. Demand deposits accounted for 83.60% of household deposits, while time deposits represented 16.40%.
A similar structure was recorded across the banking sector, where demand deposits made up 85.18% of total deposits. The average effective deposit interest rate across Montenegro’s banking system stood at just 0.29% in August. Returns were higher for fixed-term savings, reaching 2.03% for deposits with maturities of between one and three years.
Despite the higher rates available on longer-term deposits, immediately accessible accounts continued to hold the overwhelming majority of household funds. The figures show that household deposits are expanding while demand accounts remain the dominant form of bank savings. This deposit structure provides banks with domestic funding, while the average remuneration received by depositors remains low.
