The Gvozd wind farm, located on the Krnovo plateau near Nikšić, is approaching the final stages of construction, with initial electricity generation anticipated to commence approximately four months ahead of schedule. This development represents a crucial step in Montenegro’s transition toward renewable energy sources.
This wind farm is a vital addition to Montenegro’s electricity infrastructure, which has predominantly relied on hydropower and the Pljevlja coal-fired power plant for electricity generation. Once operational, it will be the first significant renewable energy project established by the state-owned utility Elektroprivreda Crne Gore (EPCG) in over 40 years, indicating a renewed focus on enhancing domestic energy production capabilities.
Situated in a high-wind area, Gvozd will initially feature eight wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 54.6 MW. The facility is projected to generate around 150 GWh of electricity annually, enough to power approximately 25,000 households. This capacity will play an essential role in meeting local energy demands.
The project is part of EPCG’s broader strategy to expand renewable energy resources. Future phases are planned to increase the total capacity to about 75 MW, which would elevate annual electricity generation to over 210 GWh upon full completion.
Financing for the Gvozd wind farm has been bolstered by international financial institutions. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has provided a loan package exceeding €100 million to facilitate both the construction and expansion phases of this wind energy initiative.
The project also necessitated substantial upgrades to grid-connection infrastructure. This includes the establishment of a 33/110 kV substation at Gvozd, enhancements to the existing Krnovo substation, and new 110 kV transmission lines that will link the wind farm with Montenegro’s overall transmission network.
In terms of system impact, Gvozd is expected to enhance Montenegro’s efforts towards energy diversification. Historically, the country’s electricity generation has been heavily reliant on hydropower, making it susceptible to fluctuations in water availability during dry periods. The introduction of wind energy will provide a complementary resource that enhances energy security while contributing to reduced carbon emissions.
<pThe Gvozd facility also holds regional significance. While Montenegro already hosts other wind parks such as Krnovo and Možura developed in collaboration with international partners, Gvozd stands out as it is primarily driven by domestic efforts within EPCG’s portfolio. Its completion marks a pivotal moment for increased local involvement in renewable energy initiatives.
Upon full commissioning, the project is expected to prevent tens of thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions each year, aiding Montenegro’s long-term decarbonization goals and aligning with European climate policies. The commencement of electricity production from Gvozd will signify a new era for Montenegro’s energy sector, where wind power increasingly complements hydropower in the national energy mix.
