Family-owned companies in northern Montenegro are adding tourism activities to established businesses and inherited properties, with development taking place alongside production and logistics operations.
Pakcentar, a company based in Bijelo Polje, started operating in 2008 with two employees. Its business activities have since expanded from small-scale production to include logistics and tourism.
The company’s development illustrates a gradual diversification process in which an established operation adds new services over time. Its existing operational experience and customer relationships provide a base for expansion, while broader activities also bring additional costs and management requirements. In Mojkovac, the Krsmanović family is developing a rural-tourism business after returning from Podgorica. In Morakovo, the Perović family is developing a tourism offering on inherited property.
The two family projects place individual operators and their properties within the development of northern Montenegro’s tourism sector. Their business performance will depend on bookings, operating seasons and the ability to provide a consistent visitor experience. Developments in Pljevlja have highlighted the difference between the area’s natural and food resources and its limited number of tourists. The situation indicates the need for accommodation, promotion and accessible services alongside existing attractions.
For smaller investors, family-owned properties and established businesses can provide a starting point for tourism activities. Development nevertheless requires controlled expenditure and realistic occupancy expectations. The expansion of tourism activities among family businesses adds another element to the economic use of existing properties and local resources in northern Montenegro.
