Montenegro is expanding its advanced diagnostic capacity through projects with the International Atomic Energy Agency, involving a PET/CT scanner and four digital mammography systems.
PET/CT and Mammography Investments
The Health Ministry said Montenegro will receive one PET/CT scanner and four digital mammography systems. The PET/CT project is valued at just under €1.9 million, with the associated facility expected within about 18 months. The breast-cancer screening project is worth around €1.6 million.
The investments are expected to expand advanced imaging capacity in Montenegro and reduce the need for some patients to travel abroad for diagnostics.
Ongoing Medtech Requirements
The equipment will require continuing specialist services. PET/CT systems need maintenance, calibration, medical physicists, trained radiologists, imaging software and radiopharmaceutical supplies. Digital mammography creates similar requirements for servicing, quality assurance, image storage and specialist interpretation. This creates recurring demand for medical-equipment suppliers, maintenance contractors, imaging-software providers, training companies and specialist healthcare logistics.
Domestic Healthcare Capacity
Greater domestic diagnostic capacity could allow Montenegro to retain more healthcare spending within the country. Procedures performed abroad generate treatment costs as well as travel and administrative expenses. The utilisation of the new equipment will depend on sufficient patient volumes, staffing and maintenance capacity. Workforce planning will therefore remain an important part of the investment alongside procurement and installation.
