Reconstruction of the main road from Slijepač Most to the entrance to Berane, part of the Lepenac – Ribarevina – Poda – Berane project, has provided a safer, faster and more comfortable connection between Bijelo Polje and Berane, as well as a modern access route to the future Bar–Boljare highway, Prime Minister Milojko Spajić stated, according to the PM’s office.
He was joined by Deputy Prime Minister for Infrastructure Milun Zogović, Minister of Transport Maja Vukićević, and Director of the Transport Administration Radomir Vuksanović to officially mark the completion of the reconstruction.
The total reconstructed section from Slijepač Most to Berane is 35 km long, with a contract value of €35.7 million (excluding VAT). The project was financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB).
Spajić highlighted that this is the largest road reconstruction project in Montenegro to date, improving regional connectivity and forming a key access route to the upcoming highway.
- “We promised that Berane and the Vasojevići region would become a transport hub, and that is now becoming a reality,” Spajić said.
Deputy PM Zogović emphasized broader progress in northern Montenegro, including the reconstruction of the Mateševo–Andrijevica road over Trešnjevik, the launch of the ski-lift at Štedim in Rožaje, and the opening of the Vrulja–Matijevići road near Pljevlja.
- “Everything promised to the north is being delivered,” he stated.
Minister Vukićević announced more significant investments for the region, such as:
- The Berane–Rožaje road (30 km)
- The Berane–Andrijevica road
- Additional upgrades to complement the already improved Trešnjevik route.
Transport Administration Director Vuksanović explained that work on the Lepenac–Ribarevina–Poda–Berane sections began on August 1, 2023, and were completed ahead of the 28 December 2025 deadline. The works were performed by the Strabag–Bemax consortium.
The reconstruction included:
- Complete replacement of the road structure
- Construction of retaining walls
- Rehabilitation of slopes, bridges, and tunnels
- Stabilization of landslides
- Installation of drainage for both surface and underground water
At the request of local residents, sidewalks and street lighting were added along nearly 10 km of the route, worth about €3 million, significantly improving safety in populated areas. Parts of the water supply network were also repaired or newly built.
The project also includes new road markings, signage, and modern passive safety systems.
With the completion of this major work, residents of the region now gain a modern, safer, and higher-quality road, enhancing traffic safety and overall service levels on Montenegro’s road network.
