The Mayor of Ulcinj, Genci Nimanbegu, has called on members of Montenegro’s Parliament to vote against the proposed tourism and real estate cooperation agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), warning it threatens the country’s natural heritage and public interest.
In a video message posted to Facebook, Nimanbegu emphasized that the “battle for Velika Plaža” — Montenegro’s largest beach — is not over. He urged citizens to gather in front of the Parliament building in Podgorica on Tuesday to protest the agreement and stand alongside civil society groups in defense of the coast, much like previous successful efforts to protect Valdanos, the Ulcinj Salina, and other vulnerable areas.
“The Parliament is set to continue its session tomorrow with the goal of approving an agreement that goes against our interests. We must raise our voices together and oppose the plans to pave over Velika Plaža and turn it into a closed-off resort,” Nimanbegu stated.
He also issued a direct appeal to lawmakers, warning them that should they vote in favor of the deal, the responsibility would rest personally on them, “today and forever.”
“Do not vote for this agreement. Don’t play with principles or the most beautiful natural jewel that any country would envy. Our message is clear — Velika Plaža is not for sale. We will not trade away our heritage, which belongs to future generations,” he said.
