Montenegro’s Adriatic seaports reported a modest increase in cargo traffic during the fourth quarter of 2025, with total goods handled reaching 604,900 tonnes. This figure represents a 1.6 percent rise compared to the same quarter in 2024, as indicated by data from the national statistical office. The growth trend observed throughout the year continued, with similar increases noted in earlier quarters.
The dynamics of imports and exports revealed contrasting trends. Imports surged by approximately 33 percent year-on-year, totaling 433,400 tonnes, while exports experienced a significant decline of about 36 percent, falling to 171,500 tonnes. This shift highlights evolving trade patterns and changing demand within the region.
Italy emerged as Montenegro’s primary trading partner in the fourth quarter, accounting for around 128,000 tonnes of cargo throughput. Other notable trading partners included Egypt, Indonesia, Greece, Turkey, and Croatia, which contributed to the overall activity at Montenegro’s seaports.
The Port of Bar remains the country’s main cargo facility and continues to play a crucial role in maritime freight operations. Smaller ports along the Adriatic coast, such as Kotor, Risan, Tivat, and Zelenika, also contribute to the overall cargo throughput. However, passenger traffic through these ports saw a slight decrease compared to the previous year, with 110,200 passengers recorded in Q4 2025 compared to 114,900 in Q4 2024.
Overall, Montenegro’s ports are navigating a year characterized by moderate growth in cargo movement amid shifts in import-export balances and broader transportation trends affecting the Western Balkans.
