Spanish airline Iberia has launched its first direct service between Madrid and Tivat, introducing a new international route during the peak period of Montenegro’s summer tourism season. The new connection started on 18 July and will operate until 15 September, with the carrier deploying Airbus A320 aircraft on flights scheduled twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Flight schedule and capacity
Iberia’s IB865 flight is scheduled to depart Madrid at 10.40 and arrive at Tivat Airport at 13.45. The return service is planned to leave Tivat at 14.30.
The seasonal programme includes 6,300 available seats over the two-month operating period. Based on an equal distribution of capacity between both directions, the service represents approximately 3,150 inbound seats for passengers travelling to Montenegro.
Access to Spanish market and international connections
The new route provides direct air access between Montenegro and Spain, while also enabling connections through Iberia’s network to Latin America. The service adds another international link for Tivat Airport during the summer season and supports access to Montenegro’s coastal tourism destinations, particularly the Bay of Kotor area.
Impact on coastal tourism sector
The route is connected with demand from visitors travelling to coastal destinations, including areas around Porto Montenegro, Luštica Bay and Portonovi, as well as higher-category hotel facilities. The additional connection supports the diversification of Montenegro’s tourism markets by introducing direct access from Spain alongside existing visitor flows from other European regions.
Future of the seasonal service
The continuation of the Madrid–Tivat route beyond the current summer schedule will depend on operational performance, including passenger demand, ticket yields and airport processing capacity during periods of high seasonal traffic. The current programme runs for a limited period, while results from the first operating season will determine potential adjustments to the schedule in future years.
