Minister of Transport Maja Vukićević emphasized that the Government’s top priorities remain the development of Montenegro’s northern region and the improvement of road safety.
During her visit to the reconstruction works on the Rožaje – Most Zeleni section of the main road, Vukićević stated that the project will significantly enhance safety for all road users.
“This section is of great importance, particularly from a safety perspective, as it passes through a residential area. By reconstructing this part of the road, we will greatly improve traffic safety,” Vukićević said, according to a statement from the Ministry of Transport.
She highlighted that this is just one of several infrastructure projects in the northern region, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to investing in road infrastructure as a key development strategy.
“This year, we plan to continue or start construction and reconstruction works on about 323 kilometers of regional and main roads—130 km in the northern region, 135 km in the central region, and 58 km in the coastal area,” Vukićević added.
She also referenced other projects currently underway or planned within the Rožaje municipality.
One major project is the second phase of the Rožaje bypass construction. A new public tender for the selection of contractors for the 2.6-kilometer-long bypass, estimated at €14.5 million including VAT, is currently open. Bid opening is scheduled for April 29, and if the tender process goes smoothly, construction is expected to begin in the second half of the year.
Another project involves the reconstruction of the Most Zeleni – Vuča road, specifically the Biševo – Vuča section (Phase I). The tender process for selecting contractors and supervisors will begin after the decision is made to establish public interest for land expropriation, which is a prerequisite for obtaining a building permit.
Also in the pipeline is the reconstruction of the Berane – Rožaje section of the M-5 main road. The public tender for this approximately 30-kilometer section, estimated at €60 million, is expected soon. The project will be financed through a loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB).
In addition to infrastructure investments, the Ministry is actively working to improve road safety, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children and pedestrians.
Under the “Safe School Zones” project, safety enhancements around the “Bać” and “Bratstvo i jedinstvo” elementary schools in Rožaje have been completed. Work is also ongoing to improve safety at the intersections of state roads, such as Most Zeleni – Rožaje and Rožaje – Kula, through the “Safe Intersections” project.
Minister Vukićević concluded that the Ministry will continue to invest heavily in road infrastructure, especially in the north, to support balanced regional development, improve connectivity, and ensure greater safety for all road users.
