Montenegro’s industrial production increased 10% in the first five months of 2026, with the expansion largely reflecting a sharp rise in electricity generation.
Power generation accounts for major share of industrial increase
According to the Ministry of Finance, electricity production rose 34.2% year on year during January-May. The increase in overall industrial production was therefore accompanied by a substantially stronger expansion in electricity output.
Electricity generation is affected by conditions that differ from those influencing conventional manufacturing, including hydrological conditions, generation availability and energy-market conditions. Changes in these factors can produce significant year-on-year variations in electricity output without corresponding changes in manufacturing capacity.
Electricity exports increase despite weaker merchandise trade
The higher electricity output was also reflected in Montenegro’s external trade. Electricity exports reached €63.2 million in January-May, representing a 3.3% increase compared with the corresponding period of 2025. The increase in electricity exports came as Montenegro’s total merchandise exports declined 9.4% over the same period. Electricity consequently contributed to both industrial production and export earnings during the first five months of the year.
Energy sector gains broader economic importance
Higher domestic electricity production can affect several areas of Montenegro’s economy. Increased generation contributes directly to the industrial-production index, supports electricity exports and can reduce the requirement for imported electricity when domestic generation conditions are favourable. The impact of electricity output on industrial indicators is therefore distinct from growth generated through new factories, expanded processing capacity or increased production across several manufacturing segments.
Montenegro’s 10% industrial production growth during January-May reflects the significant contribution of the electricity sector, while the 34.2% increase in electricity production was considerably stronger than the overall industrial increase. The performance demonstrates the contribution of electricity generation to industrial output and export income, while the available figures do not establish a comparable broad-based expansion across Montenegro’s wider industrial base.
