Montenegro’s government is prioritizing the effective use of financial resources as a crucial factor for accelerating economic growth and advancing its European Union integration efforts. In a recent meeting in Podgorica, Finance Minister Novica Vuković and Gert Jan Kopman, the Director-General for Enlargement and Neighbourhood at the European Commission, discussed fiscal reforms and the next steps in the EU accession process, highlighting the importance of financial discipline in achieving broader economic objectives.
During their discussions, officials concentrated on the remaining chapters in the EU accession negotiations relevant to the finance ministry, particularly Chapter 9 (Financial Services) and Chapter 29 (Customs Union). They explored ways to enhance cooperation in aligning Montenegrin legislation with EU standards. Vuković stressed that strategic and efficient utilization of funds from EU pre-accession instruments and regional development plans is vital not only for economic growth but also for demonstrating Montenegro’s readiness for EU membership.
The conversation also included strategies for improving the absorption and deployment of funds from initiatives like the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans. These efforts are expected to accelerate infrastructure improvements, boost competitiveness, and facilitate deeper economic convergence with EU standards. Vuković noted Montenegro’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations while establishing robust institutions that support sustainable economic development beyond merely meeting formal criteria.
This focus on efficient fund utilization aligns with broader development initiatives, including recent support from the European Investment Bank aimed at enhancing education and infrastructure projects. Such initiatives are designed to strengthen the economic resilience of public services and promote regional development through targeted loans and technical assistance.
Both parties acknowledged that a concentrated effort toward legislative alignment and institutional strengthening is essential moving forward. The optimal deployment of available financial resources, both domestic and linked to the EU, will be critical in sustaining momentum on Montenegro’s economic agenda and its integration into the European Union.
