Bojan Filipović, president of the Mojkovac Tourism Association, reports that ongoing roadworks on the crucial Mojkovac–Đurđevića Tara regional road—often called the “lifeline of northern Montenegro tourism”—have severely impacted local tourism this summer. The road will remain closed throughout the summer due to landslide repairs at Sokolovina, causing a dramatic drop in visitors. Campsites and private accommodations are nearly empty, with only about 10% of last year’s guest numbers. Many businesses face reduced hours or possible closures.
The road is popular among motorcyclists, cyclists, and campers, and its closure is expected to damage Montenegro’s tourism reputation. Radonja Vuković, director of Mojkovac’s Tourist Organization, highlights that 80% of tourist traffic depends on this and nearby roads, emphasizing the urgent need to complete repairs to support tourism and the local economy. Delays in fixing the Sokolovina landslide—an expensive and complex project started in 2023—have contributed to a stagnant tourism development.
Local authorities have held meetings with stakeholders and offered financial subsidies to support tourism businesses most affected by the closures. However, Filipović warns that current support mainly helps larger companies, leaving seasonal workers and smaller rural tourism operators vulnerable.
Growing popularity of rural tourism
Despite infrastructure challenges, rural tourism in Mojkovac continues to grow, attracting domestic and international visitors seeking active outdoor experiences such as fly fishing, rafting, mountain biking, and hiking. This trend presents opportunities for local economic development and the promotion of authentic, sustainable tourism.
Kolašin faces challenges as Israeli tourist arrivals drop
Kolašin experienced a strong start to June’s tourist season, but mass cancellations by Israeli tourists—who previously formed a significant visitor segment—have affected hotel bookings, especially after flight cancellations linked to the situation in Israel. The town still hosts visitors from several European countries, with growing interest in nature and active holidays.
To boost the summer season, Kolašin will host the new Echo Festival from June 27 to 29, featuring outdoor sports activities and concerts by popular artists. Traditional cultural events and weekly street performances will continue through the summer, aiming to enrich the local tourism offer and attract visitors.
