Montenegro’s mountain ranges will soon welcome a new attraction for adventure and nature enthusiasts — the “Via Ferrata Prokletije”. This project aims to showcase the wild beauty of the Grebaje valley and the Volušnica cliffs through “iron paths” that connect rocks, peaks, and people.
Launched by the International Foundation “Prokletije – Our Responsibility,” the project represents a major step toward sustainable tourism in the Plav and Gusinje regions. The Environmental Protection Agency has officially approved construction within the Prokletije National Park, marking the beginning of implementation.
According to Ruždija Adžović, executive director of the foundation and long-time member of the Bosniak Association in New York, the initiative was born from the Montenegrin diaspora’s desire to combine international experience with the country’s natural potential. “Our goal is clear — to develop mountain and adventure tourism in northern Montenegro while preserving nature and tradition,” Adžović said.
The main project, “Via Ferrata Volušnica,” designed by engineer Budo Bečković from Nikšić, is expected to position Montenegro as a new destination for mountain and adventure tourism. The route will span about 1,100 meters, climbing from the Treća Livada area to the Maja Can peak at 2,240 meters. It will feature four types of trails — a children’s route, a family trail, an extreme path, and a descent route — ensuring accessibility for everyone from beginners to experienced climbers.
Adžović emphasized that this is not only a tourism project but also a developmental and cultural initiative, bringing economic opportunities to Montenegro’s north. The foundation hopes the ferrata will attract 100,000 to 200,000 visitors annually and become one of the region’s top adventure destinations.
“Prokletije is our jewel,” Adžović concluded. “This project is proof that our diaspora can contribute to Montenegro’s progress — we’re not just building a climbing route, we’re building the future.”
