Tivat recorded an increase in tourist arrivals and revenue during the summer season, but several challenges remain, according to Nina Lakičević, director of the local Tourist Organization.
Data for the first seven months show a 3% increase in arrivals and overnight stays compared to the same period last year, totaling approximately 751,000 overnight stays. Revenue for the first eight months rose by 12% compared to last year, which was already a record year.
Lakičević noted that while hotels experienced growth throughout most of the year, private accommodations saw a decline during the peak summer season. She also highlighted issues such as overcharging for sunbeds and additional services in front of hotels and resorts, which can negatively affect the destination’s reputation.
Infrastructure problems, including traffic congestion on main boulevards and access to the airport, were cited as factors impacting the city’s image. Delays in obtaining work permits for seasonal employees, sometimes taking up to six weeks, also create operational challenges for businesses.
Lakičević emphasized the importance of monitoring regional competition, improving service quality, and better coordination among ministries, local authorities, and tourism operators. She stressed that tourism is a key economic sector for Montenegro and that the region could benefit year-round, from April to November, with proper preparation and cooperation.
Regarding upcoming events, a public call has been announced for New Year market houses, offering five large and five small units, with priority given to the highest bids. The goal is to extend the tourist season and retain workforce, maximizing Tivat’s available capacities and potential.
