The Savin Kuk ski resort, located near Žabljak, Montenegro, has reported a successful winter season marked by robust visitor numbers and steady ski pass sales since its opening on January 12. According to data from local tourism authorities and the operator Turistički Centar Durmitor, around 4,500 ski passes were sold in the first month and a half, while total guest visits reached approximately 9,000 during this period. These figures indicate that demand is consistent with last winter’s performance.
Data from the local tourist organization reveals that visitor occupancy rates in January matched those of the previous year, with tourists arriving from over 30 different countries. Recent snowfall and favorable weather conditions have further supported skiing activities, particularly on weekends. However, operators have noted that continued snowfall will be crucial for maintaining visitor numbers through February and into the following months.
This season’s pricing for ski passes has remained stable compared to previous years, with daily adult tickets priced at around €16 and children’s tickets at approximately €10. To encourage local participation, residents of Žabljak and surrounding areas benefit from discounted rates and free parking options.
Despite the encouraging figures regarding visitor turnout, local tourism authorities and operators have highlighted significant infrastructure challenges facing the development of winter tourism in Žabljak. The director of the town’s Tourist Organisation emphasized the urgent need for increased hotel capacity, renovation of the main Savin Kuk chairlift, and improvements to smaller lifts in the vicinity to enhance competitiveness as a ski destination and extend visitor stays beyond just weekends.
Stakeholders advocate for investments aimed at upgrading lift systems, expanding accommodation options, and enhancing supporting amenities. Such developments could enable Žabljak to capture a greater share of regional winter tourism demand while leveraging its natural advantages, including its location within Durmitor National Park and a reputation for reliable snow conditions. Economic benefits could manifest in longer average stays, increased ancillary spending, and job creation within hospitality and related sectors.
As the winter season continues, organizers are also planning additional events such as the Durmitor Winter RUN, a winter trail racing event that has attracted over a hundred participants. This initiative aims to diversify winter tourism offerings beyond traditional alpine sports.
While current sales data and visitor statistics reflect sustained interest in Savin Kuk’s skiing options, local leaders and industry representatives emphasize that strategic investments in infrastructure are essential to enhance Žabljak’s competitiveness and fully realize its potential as a year-round mountain tourism destination.
