Pljevlja Coal Mine has successfully maintained employee safety, production stability, and continued investments in modernization and sector development despite numerous challenges. The 73rd anniversary of the mine and Miners’ Day were marked with a formal ceremony attended by government officials, energy sector representatives, local authorities, business partners, miners, and community leaders.
CEO Nemanja Laković highlighted that nearly 70% of the river Ćehotina diversion project has been completed, with coal extraction on track to exceed planned output by 10%, ensuring sufficient supply for the Pljevlja Thermal Power Plant after its reconnection to the grid. He also noted that the mine achieved positive results in the first quarter and operated without burdening its owner, Elektroprivreda Crne Gore (EPCG), during the first half of the year.
Energy and Mining Minister Admir Šahmanović emphasized the challenging nature of this year but praised the workforce for maintaining energy supply and advancing complex projects. He underscored the government’s commitment to responsible, modern, and sustainable development of Montenegro’s mining sector, aligned with the principles of a just transition.
EPCG Board Chairman Milutin Đukanović highlighted the mine’s alignment with green transition goals, noting plans to develop large-scale solar power projects.
At the ceremony, contracts extending the mine’s concession until 2050 were signed, securing long-term exploitation of significant coal reserves in the Pljevlja region and supporting further development of northern Montenegro’s mining potential.
