The just transition plan for the Pljevlja Coal Mine envisions the establishment of 12 new business units, some of which are already operational. In the coming period, two energy projects are set to be implemented, alongside the construction of business-residential and recreational-tourism facilities, reports RTCG.
The demanding process of a just transition at the Pljevlja Coal Mine has been taken very seriously, with a precise plan developed and already put into action. According to CEO Nemanja Laković, the plan includes the creation of 12 new companies within the mining enterprise, several of which are already functioning.
“We are carrying out works on a section of the Ćehotina River for Ekofond, working on facades, and executing projects for the Pljevlja Municipality, such as waterworks, as well as numerous tasks for the Electric Utility. This group is already established and capable of operating as an independent unit. The asphalt facility leased from Vektra Jakić has also been activated, forming another new operational unit in Pljevlja that had been inactive for a long time. It has already delivered its first quantities of asphalt,” Laković said.
In addition to these two units, several more new operational divisions are expected to become active in a relatively short period.
“Within the company, we plan to build one of the largest solar parks in Montenegro, with a capacity of around 62 MW. We have obtained the urban and technical permits for this project and hope to start construction of the solar park in the spring. Additionally, a new 2.2 MW mini-hydropower plant is planned on the new Ćehotina River channel, which is expected to generate significant revenue for the mine in the coming period, given the EU’s decarbonization rules,” he explained.
Alongside business-residential and tourist-recreational complexes set to be developed, the coal mine is charting a path toward its goal of creating as many new, long-term sustainable jobs as possible through the company.
