Energy efficiency represents a reduction in electricity consumption without compromising citizens’ comfort and has enormous potential to improve the standard of living and economic opportunities, said Ivan Bulatović, the Executive Director of the Electricity Company of Montenegro (EPCG).
Speaking at the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference (COP) in Baku, Bulatović stated that the real benefits of energy efficiency in Montenegro and the rest of the Western Balkans will be fully realized once electricity prices reach the European average. At that point, energy-saving and consumption optimization measures will become economically more significant.
According to the statement from EPCG, Bulatović presented the company’s efforts in developing green projects and enhancing energy efficiency in Montenegro, with support from both domestic and international institutions, including UNDP. Recently, a memorandum of understanding was signed between EPCG and UNDP to strengthen cooperation in areas of green development and sustainability.
Bulatović particularly focused on the “Solari” project, which EPCG is implementing with support from the Eco-Fund and funds raised through CO₂ credits. The project enables citizens to install solar panels for their own energy needs.
“Through this project, EPCG and the Eco-Fund also provide subsidies for energy efficiency improvement projects, such as the installation of heat pumps, thermal insulation of facades, and the installation of high-quality energy-efficient windows and doors,” the statement added.
Bulatović also reminded attendees about the memorandum of understanding signed between EPCG and UNDP, emphasizing the importance of international support in achieving Montenegro’s green transition.
“With the support of UNDP and other relevant institutions, EPCG continues to implement projects that enhance the energy sector while also providing citizens with access to green technologies,” said Bulatović.
He also highlighted the significance of future green projects that EPCG plans to carry out with the strategic support of institutions, underscoring the company’s commitment to creating a more sustainable energy system in Montenegro.
