The “Bijela” wind farm, planned near Šavnik, Montenegro, will be powered by an 18.2 km-long transmission line passing through protected areas, including the Dragišnica and Komarnica nature park and the Durmitor National Park. The wind farm will consist of 17 turbines, each 115 meters tall, with an estimated annual electricity production of 334,898 gigawatt-hours.
The project involves clearing 140,000 square meters of land, mostly forest, and will not affect the local population as the area is sparsely populated. The planned transmission line will connect the “Bijela” substation with the existing “Brezna” substation, and will include 65 poles. The project is expected to have minimal impact on the environment, although some wildlife habitats will be affected by construction activities.
Vjetro park Bijela, the company behind the project, has resolved property and legal issues and is prepared to begin construction once the necessary permits are obtained. The wind farm’s operational life is expected to be at least 25 years, and construction will employ up to 100 workers.
Public consultations on the Environmental Impact Assessment are open until May 12, 2025.
