In Montenegro, collective accommodation recorded 244.9 thousand tourist arrivals and 1.06 million overnight stays in August, according to preliminary data from Monstat. Compared to August 2024, this represents a decrease of more than 25 thousand overnight stays.
The figures are particularly discouraging considering that in July, across all types of accommodation, 3.37 million overnight stays were registered, which was 100 thousand or 3% fewer than in the same month last year. The number of overnight stays is the key indicator for measuring tourism turnover, as it is multiplied by the average tourist spending, based on a set methodology, to determine the value of tourism turnover, one of the most important components of Montenegro’s GDP.
The latest data indicate a continuation of negative trends in the current tourist season. For the January–June period of this year, the number of overnight stays across all accommodation types was down by 272 thousand, or 5.4%, compared to the same period last year.
These results are even more concerning given that official data showed a 3.4% decline in tourism turnover in 2024 compared to 2023. Therefore, 2025 reflects another drop, following an already weak previous year.
Monstat reported that in August this year, most overnight stays were realized in coastal areas (92.5%), followed by the capital city (3.6%), mountain resorts (2.5%), and other areas (1.4%).
Collective accommodation facilities include hotels, guesthouses, motels, tourist resorts, holiday centers, hostels, and campsites. They do not include private accommodation such as rented houses, rooms, or tourist apartments.
