Construction has started on a wastewater infrastructure project in Mojkovac, northern Montenegro, valued at 6.1 million euros and scheduled for completion by 2029. The European Investment Bank (EIB) confirmed that work began on 4 November. The investment will expand sewerage and wastewater treatment services in the municipality while helping reduce pollution risks affecting the Tara River.
The works include approximately eight kilometres of new sewerage infrastructure serving Podbišće, Juškovića Potok and Ambarine. The project will separate stormwater and wastewater collection networks and upgrade Mojkovac’s wastewater treatment plant. The upgraded treatment infrastructure is intended to extend services to more than 5,000 households.
Financing includes a 2.9 million euro European Union grant approved in 2025 through the Western Balkans Investment Framework and a 1.5 million euro loan from the EIB. National and municipal authorities will provide the remaining project funding.
A Turkish-Greek consortium comprising Arikan Insaat Taahhut Ticaret ve Sanayi and Karkanias Environmental Technology is implementing the construction contract. Italy’s IRD Engineering is supervising the works, while Montenegro’s municipal infrastructure implementation company PROCON is coordinating project execution.
The investment is intended to improve environmental protection and municipal services. Wastewater infrastructure is described as an important part of Montenegro’s alignment with EU environmental standards and its broader accession commitments. The project is expected to generate construction activity and demand for engineering services during implementation, with completion scheduled by 2029.
