Montenegro is expected to provisionally close two additional negotiating chapters in its European Union accession process at an accession conference scheduled for 14 July 2026. The country is set to complete Chapter 8 on competition policy and Chapter 29 on the customs union, increasing the number of provisionally closed chapters to 18 out of 33.
The competition policy chapter covers areas including state aid, public enterprises, concession arrangements and the treatment of major infrastructure projects. The customs union chapter relates to trade procedures, border systems and integration into the EU customs framework. The progress provides further movement in Montenegro’s EU accession negotiations and is relevant for investors evaluating regulatory conditions, including legal predictability, state-aid rules and future access to the European single market.
