Montenegrin Minister of Transport Maja Vukićević said that new Wizz Air routes, starting next year, will significantly improve the country’s air connectivity, tourism, and overall economy.
She emphasized that the opening of Wizz Air’s new base in Montenegro will not threaten the national airline ToMontenegro, noting that the flag carrier also plans to expand its network next year.
“Low-cost routes were much needed — Montenegro has not been sufficiently connected with the rest of the world. From the beginning of my mandate, I’ve been committed to bringing low-cost airlines back to our airports,” Vukićević told Prva TV.
She explained that negotiations with Wizz Air lasted over a year and have now been finalized. Ticket sales have already begun, and the airline plans to offer over one million seats, which is expected to bring a significant increase in passenger traffic and benefit Montenegro’s economy and tourism.
Vukićević added that the government is preparing infrastructure upgrades, particularly at Tivat Airport, to handle the expected rise in traffic.
Regarding the national airline, she said ToMontenegro performed well this year despite operational challenges. “They achieved strong results, which is commendable given that many national carriers worldwide struggle to stay profitable,” she said.
“The arrival of Wizz Air should not be seen as competition but as an investment boom for Montenegro. It will attract more airlines and create more connections to and from the country,” Vukićević concluded.
