The Government of Montenegro has adopted a Decision on temporary measures to limit the prices of products of special importance for the life and health of citizens, along with a list of such products.
According to the Government, this measure continues the “Limited Prices” campaign aimed at protecting the living standard of citizens, maintaining stable market supply, and preventing further increases in the prices of essential goods, while preserving market competition.
Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Policy and Minister of Economic Development Nik Đeljošaj stated that the focus was placed on domestic products, as promoting and strengthening local production can help stabilize prices and curb inflation. The decision will remain in force until March 31, 2026.
Since the measure limits trade margins rather than fixing prices, traders can still set prices freely within the defined limits, ensuring market stability and fair competition. The list includes basic food items, dairy and meat products, flour-based goods, edible oil, hygiene products, and baby supplies.
The selection of products was based on their share in the average household consumption basket, frequency of use, and importance for daily life and public health, with a particular focus on domestic goods.
The decision also sets a price cap on wood pellets — up to 250 euros per ton for producers and up to 270 euros per ton for retail trade, with proportional pricing for smaller packages. These prices include VAT.
The margin limitation does not apply to small retailers with total sales areas under 600 square meters, in order to protect micro and small enterprises. The measure will be valid until March 31, 2026.
