Improving air connectivity in Montenegro is vital for both tourism and the overall economy of the country. In this regard, Airports of Montenegro and the Competition Protection Agency are intensively collaborating to implement jointly developed financing models and open new flight routes in line with EU standards and practices in this area, as stated in a meeting between representatives of these institutions, according to a press release from Airports of Montenegro.
The Director of the Competition Protection Agency, Nebojša Jovović, and Deputy Director, Enis Huremović, emphasized that the Agency is an active partner of Airports of Montenegro in realizing the full potential of Montenegrin airports and opening new flight routes for citizens and tourists, while respecting and applying the specific EU rules that govern this sector.
The Executive Director of Airports of Montenegro, Roko Tolić, noted that 2024 was a record year in terms of passenger numbers, with nearly three million passengers, marking a significant achievement for the company. To achieve even better results, it is essential to find additional support models for air connectivity, as neighboring competitive countries are doing. In this sense, while adhering to the EU’s strict competition and state aid rules in the aviation sector, the company, along with relevant institutions, has developed options based on EU countries’ approaches to establishing new routes and improving Montenegro’s connectivity.
Both sides agreed to continue their joint efforts to implement measures aimed at increasing the competitiveness of Montenegrin airports and attracting new airlines, supporting the development of new routes, and improving infrastructure capacity, all with the goal of stimulating tourism and economic development in Montenegro.
The intensive cooperation will continue to achieve concrete results in the near future and strengthen the competitiveness of Montenegrin airports on the international aviation map, the statement concludes.
