There is significant potential to enhance bilateral cooperation between Montenegro and Japan in the fields of economy, science and innovation, stated Japan’s Minister of Economy, Kiuchi Minoru, during a meeting with Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić.
Minister Kiuchi highlighted that both countries share values of democracy and the rule of law, and emphasized Montenegro’s strategic importance to Europe and Japan. He expressed strong support for efforts to strengthen Montenegro’s economy and improve its international standing.
Prime Minister Spajić expressed satisfaction with his visit and noted the interest shown by Japanese investors in Montenegro. He highlighted the potential for increased engagement in the near future.
Given that most Japanese companies have European headquarters in London and Vienna, it was agreed that one of these cities will host a Japan-Montenegro business forum by the end of the year to boost economic exchange and contacts.
Spajić also mentioned plans to open a Montenegrin embassy in Tokyo by the end of the year, which he believes will enhance Montenegro’s visibility in Japan and Southeast Asia.
The meeting identified numerous cooperation opportunities, especially in tourism, energy, maritime affairs, railway infrastructure, and disaster risk reduction. A joint visit by experts from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JERA) to Montenegro was agreed upon to prepare activities to advance collaboration.
Minister Kiuchi described Spajić’s visit as very successful and expressed confidence that it will provide a strong boost to relations in all areas of mutual interest.
The meeting was also attended by Montenegro’s Minister of Education, Science and Innovation Anđela Jakšić Stojanović, and Minister of Finance Novica Vuković.
