By launching the second fiber of the underwater cable to Italy, Montenegro sends a clear signal that it is ready to become a reliable partner, an energy hub, and a model for responsible resource use, stated Minister of Energy and Mining, Admir Šahmanović.
Montenegro holds significant energy potential, especially in renewable energy sources. Priorities include building new renewable energy facilities, strengthening and modernizing the transmission network, and completing the second fiber of the underwater cable to Italy—a strategic connection point to the European market. These steps aim to create a more stable and competitive energy system.
The strategic partnership with Italy through the underwater cable project is a cornerstone of Montenegro’s energy integration and regional stability.
Šahmanović participated in an event organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Central European Initiative (CEI), supported by the EBRD, highlighting strong cooperation and commitment to sustainable development, with a focus on energy as a driver of economic and integration processes.
Technical assistance from the CEI fund at the EBRD has supported Montenegro’s renewable energy auction implementation project, a key tool for attracting investments in the clean energy sector.
Acting General Director for Energy, Zvjezdan Vujović, participated in a panel on CEI and EBRD technical cooperation in Montenegro.
Montenegro is actively working to integrate into the European Union’s single electricity market, viewed as a natural step towards greater stability, transparency, and long-term benefits for citizens and businesses.
Support from the EBRD in preparing new energy laws aligned with European standards has been essential for establishing a modern regulatory framework—foundational for the energy transition and investor confidence.
