A stable and sustainable energy sector is crucial for overall European security and regional integration, according to a meeting between Montenegro’s Minister of Energy and Mining, Admir Šahmanović and EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen. During his working visit to Brussels, Šahmanović held several important meetings with high-ranking EU officials and participated in a forum on the integration of the electricity market in the European Parliament.
Šahmanović presented Montenegro’s concrete progress in aligning its energy legislation with EU standards, moving toward meeting the criteria for closing Chapter 15 – Energy. Both sides agreed that a stable energy sector is key to European security and regional integration. Jorgensen emphasized the importance of the partnership with Montenegro, encouraging continued reforms and recognizing the country’s achievements in energy.
In a separate meeting with Valentina Superti, Director for Enlargement, Šahmanović stressed the need for stronger EU support for a just transition, highlighting the importance of funding green projects and Montenegro’s request for exemption from the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) due to its economic structure and accession commitments.
Šahmanović also sought concrete backing for the second submarine cable connection project with Italy, a strategic energy project for the region. He emphasized the importance of the IAP H2 project, a bidirectional pipeline for natural gas and green hydrogen within the Southern Gas Corridor, as vital for enhancing regional cooperation and energy security.
He reiterated Montenegro’s firm commitment to its European path and readiness to actively contribute to shared goals of energy stability, market integration, and climate neutrality.
