Lidl Montenegro has made significant progress in its expansion plans, submitting a request for approval of the architectural design for a new retail store in Zeta, following earlier approval for a construction project in Bijelo Polje. The company plans to build a retail store in Zeta, having already purchased land there. Additionally, Lidl intends to acquire another 200,000 square meters to construct a logistics center.
Earlier in 2021, Lidl’s intention to enter the Montenegrin market became evident when it purchased 13,200 square meters of land from the former “Radoje Dakić” factory for 3.7 million euros. The company also acquired other properties, including land in Nikšić and a plot near RTCG, where it plans to build new facilities.
Lidl’s recent purchase of land in Berane for around 2 million euros, however, has sparked protests from local business owners who are concerned about the impact of Lidl’s development plans on their livelihoods. These owners are calling for alternative locations for Lidl’s store, as they argue that the demolition of existing businesses in Berane will harm local entrepreneurs who depend on their establishments to support their families.
The expansion of Lidl is part of the broader trend of foreign investment in Montenegro’s retail and logistics sectors, but it has also raised concerns regarding the displacement of small businesses.
