Kolašin is recording strong summer tourism demand, with hotel occupancy reaching up to 90% as Montenegro’s northern mountain destination develops beyond its traditional winter season. Data from the local tourism organisation show that visitor numbers in June increased by around 10% compared with the same month last year, while July reservations indicate continued growth.
The latest figures point to a shift in Kolašin’s tourism model, with demand increasingly spread across hotels, rural accommodation, eco-katuns and outdoor activities throughout the year.
Hotels Report Strong July Demand
The three largest hotels in Kolašin — Bjanka, Vulfenija and Drim Haus — are currently operating with occupancy rates between 80% and 90%. The level of utilisation represents a significant change for a mountain municipality that has historically relied mainly on the winter ski season, snow conditions and weekend visitors from Podgorica and the coast.
According to the local tourism organisation, reservations are arriving daily, and leading hotels are expected to maintain high occupancy levels throughout July. Demand is also increasing outside the formal hotel sector, with growing interest in rural households, eco-katuns and mountain accommodation beyond the town centre.
Summer Tourism Expands Beyond Ski Season
Kolašin’s tourism offer is increasingly based on nature, hiking, wellness, local food, rural hospitality, cultural events and organised outdoor activities, alongside its existing winter tourism infrastructure.
The broader visitor offer is creating opportunities for:
- Small accommodation providers
- Restaurants
- Local producers
- Tour guides
- Transport operators
- Event organisers
The expansion of summer demand also supports hospitality projects that are less dependent on winter peak periods.
Events Strengthen Visitor Activity
The municipality and local tourism organisation have expanded the summer programme through sporting, cultural and local-product events. Activities held during June and early July included a children’s basketball camp, an international goalkeeper camp, and a fair of medicinal herbs, domestic products and handicrafts hosted at Ski Centre Kolašin 1600. The fair brought together more than 20 exhibitors, connecting tourism activity with local production.
Tango Camp Brings International Visitors
The Tango Camp, one of Kolašin’s established summer events, remains a major contributor to visitor flows.
The three-week programme is expected to bring around 800 dancers from around the world to the town.
The event contributes to demand for:
- Accommodation
- Food services
- Transport
- Local retail
It also supports Kolašin’s development as a cultural and outdoor destination rather than only a ski centre.
Upcoming Summer Programme
The July calendar includes a Pilates camp from 11 to 14 July, while the municipality will organise the Kolašin Echo After Party for Statehood Day.
The programme includes concerts and outdoor activities featuring performances by:
- Leksington Band
- Boban Rajović
- Džejla Ramović
The “Kolašin pleše” event will take place on 26 July in cooperation with the Sonrisa dance club.
Events scheduled for August include:
- Korifej alternative theatre festival
- Etno Camp
- Bjelasica Trail
Implications for Northern Montenegro Tourism
Kolašin’s performance supports efforts to diversify Montenegro’s tourism economy, which remains strongly concentrated on the coast. Coastal destinations continue to represent the country’s main tourism engine but face challenges related to congestion, infrastructure pressure, seasonality and dependence on summer demand. Mountain destinations such as Kolašin can contribute by extending the tourism season and attracting visitors interested in:
- Cooler temperatures
- Active holidays
- Nature-based experiences
- Outdoor tourism
Hospitality and Real Estate Investment Potential
The combination of hotel demand, rural tourism growth and event activity is strengthening the investment case for:
- Boutique hotels
- Aparthotels
- Wellness lodges
- Branded mountain residences
- Serviced accommodation facilities
Future development requires coordination with infrastructure capacity, planning standards and environmental protection measures. Maintaining the natural environment remains important for preserving the factors driving current demand, including Kolašin’s landscape and mountain setting.
Local Supply Chains Benefit from Tourism Growth
The expansion of summer tourism also creates opportunities for stronger links between hospitality and local agriculture.
Events such as the medicinal herbs, domestic products and handicrafts fair demonstrate the potential for tourism to generate demand for:
- Local food products
- Beverages
- Herbal products
- Traditional crafts
- Regional services
A stronger connection between hotels, restaurants and local producers could increase the share of tourism revenue retained within northern Montenegro.
Focus Shifts Toward Year-Round Tourism Model
The latest occupancy figures highlight a move toward a year-round tourism approach.
While winter skiing remains an important part of Kolašin’s offer, the destination is increasingly developing through:
- Summer events
- Outdoor sports
- Wellness tourism
- Rural accommodation
- Conference opportunities
- Cultural programmes
- Nature-based travel
Current occupancy levels, increased visitor numbers and growing demand for mountain accommodation indicate that Kolašin’s tourism market is expanding beyond its traditional winter season.
