Montenegro’s state-owned power utility, EPCG, has requested Government approval to begin preparatory works for the construction of the Krupac solar power plant in Nikšić. According to the submitted documentation, the conceptual design envisions a photovoltaic facility with an installed capacity of 41.81 MWp.
The request, published by the Government, was submitted to the Ministry of Spatial Planning, Urbanism and State Property. Under Montenegro’s construction laws, preparatory works for projects of public interest located on state-owned land—or land owned in majority by state-controlled companies—may begin based on Government consent. To obtain approval, EPCG must submit a copy of the property certificate issued by the Real Estate Administration in Nikšić, as well as documentation confirming that the project is environmentally acceptable, in accordance with environmental impact assessment regulations.
The preparatory works study was prepared in line with urban planning and technical conditions issued by the Ministry of Ecology, Spatial Planning and Urbanism. Once approval is granted, works would begin immediately and would include excavation, levelling and soil compaction in order to prepare the site for subsequent phases of construction.
EPCG will also submit a formal application for a construction permit to the Ministry of Spatial Planning, Urbanism and State Property.
The utility’s plan is to build the Krupac solar power plant at three separate locations along the shores of Lake Krupac in Nikšić, covering a total area of around 118 hectares. The project, valued at approximately €28.2 million, is part of a wider development strategy for the Nikšićko Polje area, which includes several solar and pumped-storage hydropower facilities.
According to earlier announcements, the overall capacity of the plant is expected to reach 46.96 MWp, with 192,000 photovoltaic modules installed and an estimated annual production of 61.68 GWh.
EPCG has already received environmental approval for the project from the Environmental Protection Agency, and a tender for the development of the main design was launched in August this year.
