The Board of Directors of Elektroprivreda Crne Gore (EPCG) has approved the launch of a tender for the procurement of two Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a total project value of nearly 50 million euros. Each facility will have a capacity of 30 MW power and 120 MWh energy storage, totaling 240 MWh.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in EPCG’s modernization of Montenegro’s power system. The installation of BESS will improve electricity supply stability, enable more efficient grid management, and accelerate integration of renewable energy sources like solar and wind.
EPCG has been actively developing renewable energy projects, aiming to transition to a more sustainable energy mix in line with European and global trends. Battery storage technology is crucial to this process, as it allows surplus energy—produced during low demand or low prices—to be stored and used later when demand and prices are higher.
The systems will also reduce costly electricity imports during peak loads and enhance the operation of existing power plants, improving overall system security and economic efficiency.
One key advantage of BESS is their rapid response to sudden grid fluctuations, supporting network stability and reliability. Given Montenegro’s significant solar and wind potential, these systems help mitigate the intermittent nature of renewable energy by storing and dispatching power when needed, facilitating faster connection of new renewable plants.
Additionally, BESS provide backup reserves during outages, increasing supply security for homes and businesses, while reducing dependence on imported electricity and boosting national energy independence.
As Europe’s energy markets become more open and digitalized, flexible storage systems like these will form the backbone of smart grids, modern electricity markets, and new services enhancing system efficiency. Through this project, EPCG strengthens its leadership in the region and prepares for future challenges.
By launching this tender, EPCG demonstrates its commitment to sustainable development, cutting-edge technologies, and enhancing Montenegro’s energy security, positioning the country among those adopting the most advanced energy solutions.
