The Electric Power Company of Montenegro (EPCG) has successfully completed the reconstruction and modernization of Unit A7 as part of the project “Reconstruction and Modernization of the Perućica Hydropower Plant – Phase II.” This major project has further improved the reliability, efficiency, and flexibility of Montenegro’s oldest hydropower plant, ensuring its long-term safe and stable operation.
The reconstruction of Unit A7 included a wide range of works and the replacement of key equipment, such as a complete turbine overhaul with new nozzles and servomotors, installation of new spherical inlet valves, turbine regulation systems, excitation systems, control systems, electrical protection systems, and an advanced monitoring system. In addition, the entire 110 kV generator switchyard was reconstructed, and the existing medium-voltage equipment was replaced with new insulated busbars. Equipment installation was completed in mid-October 2025, and following successful functional and trial tests, Unit A7 was officially commissioned on October 28, 2025.
The new unit is integrated into a modern SCADA system, enabling its participation not only in primary electricity generation but also in providing additional grid services, such as secondary frequency regulation. The project is being implemented in cooperation with the renowned contractor Voith Hydro Austria, within the framework of a financial arrangement with the German Development Bank (KfW). The total investment value for Phase II amounts to 33 million euros.
EPCG’s acting Executive Director, Bojan Đordan, stated that the completion of the A7 unit reconstruction marks an important step in the modernization of Montenegro’s oldest hydropower plant and in strengthening the company’s production capacities. “With this project, we have successfully combined tradition and modern technology. By modernizing Unit A7, we have extended its operational life, increased efficiency, and ensured that the Perućica Hydropower Plant remains a reliable pillar of Montenegro’s power system for decades to come. This achievement is the result of the dedication of our teams and our strong partnership with Voith Hydro. At the same time, it confirms EPCG’s strategic commitment to sustainable development and Montenegro’s energy independence,” Đordan emphasized.
With the completion of this project, EPCG reaffirms its commitment to implementing development plans and investing in domestic hydropower capacities to ensure a stable, secure, and environmentally sustainable electricity supply for Montenegrin citizens and businesses.
