The total value of payment transactions in Montenegro for 22 working days in September amounted to €2.23 billion, according to data from the Central Bank of Montenegro (CBCG). Of that amount, 93.02% was processed through the Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system, while the remainder went through the Deferred Net Settlement (DNS) system.
The RTGS system processes individual payment transactions between participants on a gross basis in real time, whereas the DNS system handles interbank transactions on a net basis with deferred settlement.
During September, a total of 1.47 million payment orders were executed—39.71% through the RTGS system and the rest through the DNS system, CBCG reported.
The average daily volume of payment transactions across both systems was 66,830 orders, with an average daily transaction value of €101.57 million.
Over 15,070 minutes of system operation during the month, there were only 16 minutes of downtime, resulting in system availability of 99.89%.
In May, CBCG launched a new generation of the national payment system—RTS/X—fully aligned with the international ISO 20022 standard. This marks the most significant functional and technological upgrade in Montenegro’s domestic payment infrastructure since its establishment in 2005.
