Energy efficiency is a key step towards a sustainable future for Montenegro, with over 4,500 households already working to improve energy savings, according to a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) event.
UNDP’s Resident Representative in Montenegro, Ekaterina Paniklova, emphasized that investing in energy efficiency enhances quality of life. “Our goal is clear – to provide every household with access to energy-efficient solutions,” she said, highlighting the program’s success in improving living standards and reducing energy costs. The EU-funded program, implemented by the Eco-fund and supported by UNDP, allows citizens to improve energy efficiency through measures like window replacement, thermal insulation, solar panels, and efficient heating systems.
The program’s total investment is estimated at over €15 million, contributing to the creation of green jobs and strengthening the local economy. The EU has allocated €8 million to this initiative, alongside contributions from the Eco-fund and Pljevlja municipality.
The program aims to reduce energy costs, improve indoor air quality, and contribute to environmental sustainability. EU Ambassador to Montenegro, Johan Satler, emphasized energy efficiency as vital for sustainable development and Montenegro’s EU integration. Minister of Energy, Admir Šahmanović, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a competitive, eco-friendly economy, while the Mayor of Bijelo Polje, Petar Smolović, emphasized local initiatives to promote energy efficiency.
The program also supports public institutions in improving energy efficiency, with results including reduced energy costs and job creation. Eco-fund Director Draško Boljević presented data on the program’s impact, including energy savings and emission reductions.
UNDP continues to support Montenegrin institutions in promoting energy efficiency as part of the country’s green transition and EU integration process.
